Other facts about Digital Dictation

Most digital dictation systems use lossy audio compression formats to save hard drive space and increase file transfer speeds across network connections. The standard interchange format for transfering digital audio between systems is the wave format (*.wav).

It is important to note that Digital dictation is distinct from Speech Recognition. Speech Recognition is a process where digital audio is analyzed by a computer using mathematical algorithms to transcribe the document. In a pure digital dictation system the process of converting digital audio to text is done via a typist using a digital transcription software application and is normally controlled via a foot switch. Many advanced Digital Dictation workflow packages, however, combine digital dictation & transcription management software with backend and frontend speech recognition modules to improve overall transcription efficiency and reduce the workload for transcriptionists.
